Nationwide Rail Disruption Hits Germany Due to Communication System Failure

Germany faced a significant disruption in rail services late Tuesday evening, June 23, as a major failure in Deutsche Bahn’s internal communication system halted all train operations across the country.

The breakdown was attributed to issues with the GSM-R digital radio network, which facilitates wireless communication between train drivers and traffic control centers. As a result, both passenger and freight trains were delayed at various stations, causing considerable congestion, particularly at Berlin’s central station and other major hubs.

Passengers stranded during the outage were advised to remain on their trains and utilize onboard facilities while waiting for the situation to improve. Following midnight, rail services began to gradually resume.

“After a 90-minute disruption, train services are back on track. We managed to stabilize the situation using an emergency system. Our next step is to determine the cause of the failure,” stated Evelyn Palla, head of Deutsche Bahn.

In response to the inconvenience faced by travelers, Deutsche Bahn initiated a program to distribute vouchers for taxis and hotel accommodations. In Frankfurt, the railway company recommended that holders of the Deutschlandticket, a unified travel pass, seek taxi or hotel services independently and later apply for reimbursement of up to 120 euros.

Despite the resumption of services, the S-Bahn in Berlin cautioned that delays and cancellations were still occurring on several lines.

This incident is not the first of its kind for Germany’s rail network. In October 2022, a deliberate act of sabotage caused a significant disruption in northern Germany when unknown individuals cut two fiber-optic communication cables, halting train operations for three hours across multiple federal states. Additionally, in September 2024, a major technical failure in the radio communication system paralyzed train services in central Germany, severely affecting the Frankfurt transport hub. More recently, in February 2026, Deutsche Bahn experienced IT system failures due to a cyberattack, disrupting ticket booking and internal communications on high-speed ICE trains for several hours.

Germany's rail network experienced a nationwide halt due to a failure in the GSM-R communication system, affecting both passenger and freight services. The disruption led to significant delays and prompted Deutsche Bahn to issue travel vouchers while investigations into the cause are underway.
