Ukrainian President’s Absence at Recovery Conference Seen as Tension-Reducing Gesture

The upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk will proceed without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a decision interpreted as a move to ease recent tensions between Ukraine and Poland. The event is scheduled for June 25-26, 2026, and aims to attract investments and foster partnerships for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Donald Tusk, the Polish Prime Minister, confirmed he is in regular communication with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who will lead the Ukrainian delegation at the conference. Tusk expressed that he is not disappointed by this arrangement, suggesting it could lead to a more effective conference without unnecessary strain.

“I am in constant contact with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. She informed me that she will head the delegation. As far as I am concerned, I am not disappointed. I believe this may even allow for a more skillful conduct of the conference, without unnecessary tension, and I see this as a gesture of de-escalation,” Tusk stated.

He further remarked on the emotional strain that has developed between the two countries’ leaders, describing it as unnecessary and characterized by “inadequate reactions from both sides.” Tusk warned against deepening the conflict, labeling it a strategic mistake for politicians from both nations.

Notably, Polish President Karol Nawrocki was not invited to the conference, a decision that has reportedly caused dissatisfaction on his part, which he conveyed to President Zelensky. Zelensky later attributed Nawrocki’s actions to political maneuvering aimed at disrupting the event, particularly with Tusk’s involvement amid Poland’s electoral process.

The absence of President Zelensky from the Ukraine Recovery Conference is seen as a strategic move to reduce tensions with Poland. Prime Minister Tusk will engage with Ukrainian leadership, emphasizing cooperation amidst recent diplomatic strains.
