The United States and Iran have reported significant progress in their ongoing negotiations, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, during discussions held in Switzerland. Both parties described the atmosphere of the talks as “positive and constructive,” leading to the establishment of a high-level committee aimed at overseeing the mediation process.
This newly formed committee will ensure regular reporting from the negotiating teams and will lead working groups focused on nuclear issues, sanctions, and a monitoring group to facilitate effective implementation of the memorandum of understanding and other related matters.
Technical discussions are set to continue through the end of this week in Switzerland. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed that the delegations are preparing for final agreement negotiations. He noted that key topics discussed include the unfreezing of Iran’s assets and potential exemptions from sanctions on Iranian oil sales. Baghaei emphasized that both sides acknowledged the need to guarantee safe passage for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance arrived in Switzerland on June 21 to engage with the Iranian delegation, which is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The American team features special envoys from President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who arrived earlier. Additionally, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Marshal Asim Munir, key mediators in the talks, are also present.
According to Vance, the negotiations are expected to extend over several days, concentrating on Iran’s nuclear program and the situation in Lebanon.
U.S. and Iran negotiations in Switzerland, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, have made notable progress, establishing a high-level committee for oversight. Key issues include nuclear concerns and sanctions relief.
