Iran and the United States have reached a preliminary agreement on a roadmap that aims to finalize a comprehensive deal within 60 days. This announcement followed the first round of high-level negotiations held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, facilitated by Qatar and Pakistan.
The joint statement from the mediators indicates that the high-level committee has established a framework for achieving a final agreement. This includes the formation of working groups focusing on key issues such as Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, and dispute resolution.
“The high-level committee has agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days,” the mediators stated.
Additionally, the parties have set up a communication line to prevent incidents and ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that has been a point of contention in past negotiations.
Efforts to establish a mechanism to prevent clashes involving Lebanon were also discussed, with the aim of facilitating an end to military operations in the region. Ongoing hostilities between Israel and the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah have persisted despite a ceasefire.
However, the negotiations faced potential derailment. Reports indicated that the Iranian delegation expressed reluctance to continue in a quadrilateral format after a threatening statement from the US was made public. Former President Donald Trump had commented in an interview that the US could “take control” of the Strait of Hormuz, which heightened tensions during the discussions.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that as a result of the talks, some sanctions on Iranian oil were lifted, and a portion of frozen assets was released. The US has yet to comment on these claims.
In a related development, on February 28, Israel conducted an airstrike on Tehran, prompting Trump to announce a “major military operation” against Iran, citing the need to eliminate perceived threats from the Iranian regime. He accused Iran of funding and training militants across the region.
In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have launched missiles and drones towards Israel, as well as attacked US military bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring regional security and stability in the Middle East.
On March 1, the IRGC declared the initiation of a “most destructive offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic” against Israel and US bases, with Trump warning of a strong retaliation if Iran continued its plans.

By May 1, Trump reported to Congress that hostilities between the US and Iran had ceased, although American military presence in the region would remain.
