Ukraine to Decide EU Negotiator for Peace Talks with Russia, Says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine will have the final say in selecting the European Union representative for upcoming negotiations with Russia aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. This decision comes as European leaders prepare to offer several options for the negotiator.

In an interview with TCN for the “Unified News” telethon, Zelensky emphasized that while European officials will propose various formats, the ultimate choice will rest with Kyiv. He stated,

“They (the Europeans) will consider the format. And Ukraine will ultimately determine who will be the negotiator from Europe. They will suggest several possibilities,”

he explained.

Zelensky also revealed that the topic of negotiations with Russia was a significant focus during a recent European Council meeting. He noted that the private discussions lasted for two hours, marking a notable length of time dedicated to Ukrainian issues in the history of these meetings. The discussions included the role of Europe in facilitating dialogue with Russia and the implications if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not engage in negotiations soon.

Additionally, the president expressed optimism regarding Ukraine’s progress in its EU accession talks. He indicated that there are opportunities to open five more negotiation clusters between mid-July and the end of the month, contingent upon avoiding any political blockages.

“As for the other clusters, we have done everything. I do not believe we will not open them in July. […] There are chances to open five more clusters between mid-July and the end of July, unless there is purely political obstruction,”

Zelensky stated.

President Zelensky announced that Ukraine will choose the EU negotiator for peace talks with Russia, emphasizing the country's pivotal role in the process. He also expressed optimism about advancing Ukraine's EU accession discussions.
