Potential Cessation of Disability Payments for Ukrainians: Key Reasons Explained

The Ukrainian government has issued a warning that some individuals receiving disability pensions may lose their benefits if they fail to undergo required reassessments or identification checks. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to ensure that assistance is provided to those who genuinely need it.

Disability pensions are available to Ukrainians who qualify, offering financial support throughout their illness. However, there are specific circumstances under which these payments may be terminated. Authorities have outlined five primary reasons for the potential cessation of these benefits.

Reasons for Termination of Disability Payments

Individuals currently receiving disability payments risk losing them for several reasons. The first scenario involves failing to attend a scheduled medical reassessment. Men of conscription age in categories two and three are required to attend these assessments by November 1, 2025, while other categories have until April 1, 2026. Missing this appointment without a valid excuse could lead to the suspension of payments.

It is important to note that not all individuals with disabilities are mandated to undergo reassessment. Exceptions include military personnel, those with severe health conditions, and residents from occupied territories or conflict zones. Additionally, individuals who received their disability status in 2025 are not yet required to undergo reassessment.

For those who do receive a notice for reassessment and fail to attend without a valid reason, the Pension Fund has indicated that payments will cease starting from the first day of the month following the missed appointment. However, benefits can be reinstated if the individual attends the reassessment later.

Another reason for the termination of disability payments is if an individual is deemed healthy during the reassessment, resulting in the loss of their disability status and, consequently, their financial support.

Additionally, payments may be revoked if an individual submits incomplete or false information. Document forgery can lead to the cancellation of disability status and the associated benefits.

Payments can also be suspended if there has been no activity on the pension account for six months. In such cases, the funds are ‘frozen,’ but individuals can reclaim any unpaid amounts by undergoing the necessary checks with the Pension Fund.

The final reason for the cessation of disability payments is failure to complete the required identification process. This applies particularly to individuals living abroad for more than 183 days or those in temporarily occupied areas. If these individuals do not comply with the identification requirements, they risk losing their benefits.
