Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized that the opportunity for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open, despite the ongoing war. He stated that Russia has not halted hostilities, even though various options for peace have been available for some time.
“The Russians are not stopping the war, despite all the proposals being real and on the table for a long time. Putin must choose diplomacy and a genuine peace,” Zelensky asserted. He reiterated that the offer for a direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, supported by partners, is still valid.
Zelensky’s comments come in the wake of discussions held at the G7 summit, where he and former U.S. President Donald Trump talked about the potential for a meeting with Putin in the United States. Zelensky stressed that if Moscow declines the proposal, increased pressure on Russia is necessary.
Prior to the G7 summit, Kyiv had communicated through intermediaries its proposal for a meeting between the leaders. Trump acknowledged at the summit that Putin is currently in a weaker position, stating, “Russia needs to make a deal.”
Ukrainian President Zelensky has reaffirmed his invitation for direct talks with Putin, stressing that Russia has the means to end the war but has chosen not to. Discussions at the G7 summit highlighted the need for increased pressure on Russia if it refuses to engage diplomatically.
