A significant heat wave is gripping Europe, with forecasts predicting temperatures could reach as high as 44°C in parts of France. This extreme weather pattern is attributed to a blocking anticyclone, which is creating a heat dome over much of the continent.
According to meteorologist Vitaliy Postryhan, Western and Central Europe are already experiencing temperatures influenced by warm air masses from Africa. The peak of this heat is expected between June 22 and June 24. Postryhan emphasized that the anticyclone acts as an atmospheric lid, trapping hot air and leading to a gradual increase in daily temperatures.
In contrast, Ukraine remains under the influence of a cyclone from the northeast, which is bringing cooler air from northern regions. This has resulted in unstable atmospheric conditions, characterized by brief thunderstorms and rain.
On June 19, Ukrainian weather is forecasted to be predominantly sunny and dry, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 27°C. The following weekend, June 20-21, is expected to bring pleasant summer weather, with low winds, ample sunshine, and no precipitation. Nighttime temperatures will be between 13°C and 18°C, while daytime highs will reach 23°C to 28°C.
Despite the absence of a heat dome over Ukraine, there is potential for temporary warm air influxes combined with strong solar heating. Postryhan noted that while prolonged heat is unlikely in the immediate future, a few genuinely warm days with temperatures around 25°C to 28°C are possible, particularly over the weekend.
In a broader context, climatologists warn that summer 2026 could be among the hottest on record, with global average temperatures potentially rising nearly 1.9°C above pre-industrial levels. This increase is primarily attributed to greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Researchers indicate that climate change is leading to more frequent heat waves, severe storms, and wildfires, alongside unprecedented levels of carbon dioxide and heat accumulation in the planet’s climate system.
A heat wave is affecting Europe, with temperatures in France expected to soar to 44°C due to a heat dome. Meanwhile, Ukraine will experience milder conditions influenced by a cyclone, with pleasant summer weather anticipated over the weekend.
