Three Military Officials Charged with Fraud in Sumy Region

Authorities in the Sumy region of Ukraine have announced charges against three military officials for allegedly defrauding the state of over 3.4 million hryvnias. The individuals are accused of unlawfully receiving additional payments by falsely claiming participation in combat operations.

The investigation indicates that the accused include the chief of staff, the deputy commander of the military unit, the head of the planning group, and a sergeant from the same group. From August 2024 to January 2025, these officials reportedly submitted false information in official documents regarding their own and each other’s involvement in combat activities.

As a result of these fraudulent actions, the officials received additional compensation ranging from 70,000 to 100,000 hryvnias. According to law enforcement, these actions have caused significant financial damage to the state budget.

“As a result of unlawful actions, the state budget has incurred losses exceeding 3.4 million hryvnias,”

the police stated. The Sumy Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the Defense Sector is overseeing the investigation, which remains ongoing. The three officials have been charged under part 2 of Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
