Roman Abramovich’s Role as Mediator in Russia-Ukraine Talks Depends on Putin’s Decision

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich could potentially act as a mediator in discussions between Russia and Ukraine, contingent upon the approval of President Vladimir Putin.

In response to questions regarding Abramovich’s possible involvement, Zelensky remarked that Putin has already formed his own conclusions on the matter. He noted that during Abramovich’s recent visit to Kyiv, they engaged in a “very specific and substantive dialogue,” suggesting that the oligarch fully grasped Ukraine’s position.

Following their meeting, Abramovich committed to returning to Moscow to relay feedback to the Kremlin. Zelensky emphasized that while Abramovich could serve in a mediating role, the ultimate decision lies with Putin, as each nation must determine its own representatives for negotiations and national security advisory roles.

Additionally, it was highlighted that Putin, in response to a letter from Zelensky, acknowledged Ukraine’s invitation to a representative from Russian business circles for talks in Kyiv, which was later confirmed to be Abramovich.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has suggested that Roman Abramovich might mediate between Russia and Ukraine, but this hinges on Putin's approval. The discussions in Kyiv were reportedly productive, with Abramovich promising to convey Ukraine's stance back to Moscow.
