B-52 Bomber Crashes Shortly After Takeoff in California, All Eight Onboard Killed

A tragic incident occurred when a B-52 bomber crashed shortly after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in California, resulting in the deaths of all eight individuals onboard. The aircraft went down in the Mojave Desert, approximately 160 kilometers north of Los Angeles.

The crash happened during a scheduled test flight at 11:20 AM local time. Initial assessments from the airbase indicate that the accident was unsurvivable.

“We have lost eight remarkable Americans,” stated Colonel James Hayes, the deputy commander of Edwards Air Force Base.

Colonel Hayes noted that video footage of the incident confirmed that survival was impossible. Typically, the crew comprises five members.

The cause of the crash remains undetermined, with investigations expected to take several months. The B-52 was involved in a radar modernization program at the time of the accident. Emergency services responded promptly, and a significant plume of black smoke was visible above the airbase.

The B-52 Stratofortress, one of the oldest aircraft in the U.S. Air Force, has been in service since 1955. The current B-52H variant remains a crucial component of the military’s arsenal, with 76 units in active service. This aircraft is capable of carrying nuclear weapons and has been utilized in recent conflicts, including those involving the U.S. and Iran. The last fatal incident involving a B-52 occurred in 2008, when six service members lost their lives after the aircraft crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Guam.
