The upcoming G7 summit, scheduled from June 15 to 17 in Évian, France, will serve as a platform for discussions surrounding potential peace negotiations regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to sources within the German government, the most feasible format for these talks appears to involve Ukraine, Russia, the United States, and European nations.
Sources indicate that Ukraine currently finds itself in a strengthened position, with military victory for Russia deemed unlikely. Economic challenges are reportedly impacting Russia, leading to a rare opportunity for diplomatic engagement. This perspective was shared during recent discussions in London, where five key points were outlined for consideration at the summit, particularly in discussions with President Trump.
“Today, Ukraine is in a new position of strength. Russia cannot win through military means. Its economy is facing difficulties. Therefore, for the first time, a window of opportunity for diplomacy may slowly be opening. This was discussed in London during the meeting,” a source noted.
Furthermore, the source emphasized the importance of assessing the current alignment between Europe and the United States. A significant challenge remains in determining who will represent Europe in the negotiations.
“We believe that if real peace negotiations occur, the format will likely be ‘Ukraine, Russia, the USA, and Europe.’ The most challenging question is who speaks on behalf of Europe. There is currently no definitive answer. Effectiveness and legitimacy are both essential. Effectiveness means not having an overly large format, while legitimacy requires close coordination with Ukraine, the USA, and European partners,” the official explained.
However, the source expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of reaching an agreement among G7 countries and Ukraine on a new initiative for peace talks.
Previously, it was reported that U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will participate in a working session of the G7 group in France and may have the opportunity to meet informally.
The G7 summit in Évian will focus on potential peace negotiations for the Ukraine conflict, with discussions involving key stakeholders. The challenges of representation and coordination among European nations remain significant as diplomatic avenues are explored.
