Poland Raises Concerns Over Ukraine’s Historical Naming Decisions

Poland’s presidential spokesperson, Rafał Leszczyński, has highlighted the importance of discussing Polish-Ukrainian historical relations on an international platform. His remarks come in light of Ukraine’s recent naming decision regarding a military unit, which has sparked diplomatic tensions.

Leszczyński emphasized that the ongoing discourse about the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) extends beyond Poland’s borders. He noted that this discussion is crucial for the international community to understand the negative implications of Ukraine’s decision on bilateral relations, affecting both symbolic and political dimensions.

Poland is anticipating a reconsideration of this decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Leszczyński stated, “We will wait a bit longer to see if President Zelensky changes his decision. Diplomacy is guided by principles of reciprocity, and this decision will warrant a strong response from President Karol Nawrocki.”

Earlier, Marcin Przydacz, head of the Polish President’s International Policy Bureau, indicated that the future of a Polish honor bestowed upon Zelensky may hinge on Ukraine’s actions. He remarked that whether Nawrocki revokes the order awarded to Zelensky is contingent upon the Ukrainian side’s response.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented that Zelensky did not intend to offend Poland with the naming of the military unit as “Heroes of the UPA,” but he believes that the Ukrainian side lacks sensitivity in this matter.

On Monday, a meeting of the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle took place in Poland, where one of the topics discussed was the proposal by President Nawrocki to revoke the honor from Zelensky.

Poland's officials are voicing concerns over Ukraine's recent naming of a military unit, which they believe could harm bilateral relations. Discussions are ongoing regarding potential diplomatic repercussions, including the revocation of honors awarded to Ukraine's president.
