G7 Leaders to Discuss Dialogue Conditions with Russia at Upcoming Summit

The G7 summit is set to commence on June 15 in Évian, France, where leaders will explore potential parameters for dialogue with Russia. A representative from the Élysée Palace confirmed that a central topic will be the conditions under which G7 partners might encourage negotiations between Ukraine and Russia aimed at achieving lasting peace.

According to the official, determining the circumstances for facilitating talks is crucial for ensuring clarity regarding future security for both Ukraine and Europe. The representative emphasized that multiple approaches are being considered, with ongoing discussions about the best way forward.

“It is very important to address the conditions under which G7 partners can promote negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to achieve a solid and lasting peace, providing full clarity on security for Ukraine and Europe in the future,” the official stated.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has made his stance clear, which aligns with sentiments in Paris: there should be no concessions to Russia or lifting of sanctions. The French official noted that any negotiations should begin from the current front lines and include phased objectives to facilitate peace.

European representatives are also aiming to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 meeting to at least maintain the current U.S. stance on Ukraine. The Élysée Palace official outlined various forms of support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for political backing for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and long-term security.

“This support takes several forms. Firstly, it involves political backing for the goal of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security for Ukraine in the long term. This requires that we continue operational, financial, and military support for Ukraine, each according to their capabilities and perspectives. Currently, Europeans provide nearly 100% of assistance to Ukraine. However, it is important that our other G7 partners, particularly the U.S., continue to contribute, or at least not worsen their position regarding Ukraine,” the official remarked.

French President Emmanuel Macron has extended invitations to Middle Eastern leaders and President Zelensky to attend the G7 summit, which will take place from June 15 to 17 in Évian.

On June 7, President Zelensky met with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a format dubbed “E3 plus Ukraine.” Following their discussions, they released a statement outlining the conditions for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. Key conditions highlighted by the leaders of France, Ukraine, Germany, and the U.K. include:

  • Immediate ceasefire.
  • The current front line as a starting point for negotiations, without altering international borders by force.
  • Legally binding security guarantees, including the deployment of multinational forces.
  • Retention of frozen Russian assets until a decision on compensation for Ukraine is reached.
  • Protection of European security interests, considering the positions of the EU and NATO.

The upcoming G7 summit in Évian will focus on establishing conditions for dialogue with Russia regarding Ukraine. Leaders aim to clarify support mechanisms and discuss critical terms for ending the ongoing conflict.
