Farmer Replants Popular Poppy Field Near Lviv Amid Visitor Concerns

A well-known poppy field near the village of Ozhydiv in Lviv Oblast has been ploughed over by a local farmer, leading to disappointment among visitors who frequented the site for photography. The farmer, Serhiy Shelemba, stated that the decision to till the field was part of a planned agricultural process and not a response to the influx of tourists.

In recent days, the field had attracted numerous visitors, some of whom traveled specifically to take photos amidst the blooming poppies. Shelemba clarified that the field was not damaged by these activities, explaining that he had planted cover crops to improve soil quality, which he has now turned into the ground. He indicated that this process would enrich the soil with nutrients, and he plans to plant beans in its place.

Shelemba dismissed claims that he had complained about the crowds, stating, “I found it amusing that during a time of war, people are interested in taking photos and showcasing their appearances while conflict continues to affect lives. However, it is each person’s choice to engage in such activities.”

Controversy Surrounding Photography in Poppy Fields

The popularity of the poppy fields for photography has sparked discussions on social media, particularly regarding the treatment of the plants by visitors. The fields in Lviv Oblast and another location in Kyiv Oblast became focal points for public interest. However, reports emerged of visitors damaging the crops, with some driving vehicles directly onto the fields.

While the poppy field in Lviv Oblast reportedly sustained no harm from visitors, a similar situation in Kyiv Oblast, where a farmer had planted rye, resulted in damage due to foot traffic during photo sessions.
