Hungarian Parliament Approves Salary Cuts for Lawmakers and Political Parties

The National Assembly of Hungary has passed a bill aimed at reducing the salaries of lawmakers and state funding for political parties. The legislation, introduced by the Tisza party, received unanimous support from 189 members, with no votes against or abstentions.

Following the recent elections, Peter Madjar, a prominent figure in Tisza, pledged to end what he described as the previous wastefulness of public funds. He indicated that the state support for representatives and factions would be significantly curtailed through amendments to the Parliamentary Act. The bill was submitted on May 28.

Under the current regulations, the salaries of parliament members are three times higher than the national average wage. With the new law set to take effect, lawmakers’ salaries will be reduced to 1,309,493 forints (approximately $3,200), which is 1.8 times the average salary, down from 2,182,488 forints (around $5,300). These figures represent gross amounts before tax deductions.

The Hungarian National Assembly has enacted a law to lower lawmakers' salaries and reduce state funding for political parties, reflecting a shift towards fiscal responsibility. The new salary structure will see lawmakers earning significantly less than under previous regulations.
