The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has released photographic evidence of a recent military incident involving a Russian drone strike at a nuclear facility near Chernobyl. The attack occurred on June 7 at approximately 2:05 AM, targeting the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel.
According to the SBU’s investigative team, fragments of the kamikaze drone have been located and documented at the site of the attack. The explosion caused significant damage to the administrative building of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the structures used for the reception and handling of spent nuclear fuel.
Currently, SBU investigators, under the guidance of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, are conducting a comprehensive investigation in accordance with Article 438, part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The agency has classified the drone strike as a war crime.
“The Security Service of Ukraine considers the attack on the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel near Chernobyl to be a war crime committed by Russia,” the agency stated.
In response to concerns regarding nuclear safety, the SBU has assured the public that this latest act of aggression did not result in critical consequences for the facility’s infrastructure. The drone strike did not disrupt the ongoing operational processes at the storage site.
The radiation levels in the vicinity of the Chernobyl station and the adjacent exclusion zone remain within acceptable limits. There have been no reported casualties or injuries as a result of the drone attack.
The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks associated with military operations in close proximity to nuclear facilities. On June 7, the Russian drone targeted the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel, leading to structural damage and a fire at the container reception building. However, Energoatom, the state nuclear energy company, clarified that no spent nuclear fuel was stored in that particular building at the time of the attack.
Images of the damaged nuclear facility have surfaced online, illustrating the extent of the destruction. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the strike, labeling it as an egregious act of nuclear terrorism by Russia. He emphasized that the attack was a deliberate strike on a critical infrastructure site.
The SBU is investigating a Russian drone attack on a nuclear facility near Chernobyl, which has been classified as a war crime. While the strike caused damage, officials confirmed that it did not lead to critical safety issues or casualties.
