North Korea Affirms Nuclear Status Ahead of Xi Jinping’s Visit

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has asserted that the country will not relinquish its status as a nuclear power. This declaration comes as preparations are underway for a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to North Korea, marking the first such meeting in seven years.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Xi will engage in discussions with Kim Jong Un, focusing on bilateral relations. This visit aims to address the ties between China and North Korea, which remains Beijing’s only formal ally under treaty.

In her remarks, Kim Yo Jong dismissed claims regarding potential agreements between Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump concerning denuclearization during a summit in May. She stated, “We have the most accurate information on whether these assertions are true or not,” without providing further details.

Additionally, North Korea recently unveiled a new facility for producing nuclear materials, where Kim Jong Un emphasized the need for an “exponential” expansion of the nation’s nuclear arsenal. Analysts suggest that this new uranium enrichment plant is likely intended to bolster North Korea’s negotiating position ahead of Xi Jinping’s visit and to justify the acceleration of its nuclear capabilities.

Earlier this week, North Korea conducted tests of a new multi-purpose light missile launch system and a tactical cruise missile system based on artificial intelligence.

Kim Yo Jong's recent statements reaffirm North Korea's commitment to its nuclear status as Xi Jinping prepares for a significant visit. This development highlights ongoing tensions and the strategic maneuvers of both nations in the context of international relations.
