French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to engage in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the coming days, coinciding with a meeting of the “Coalition of Willing” scheduled for July 13-14 in Paris. This announcement was made during a press conference at the EU-Western Balkans summit in Montenegro.
Macron stated, “We will meet with President Zelensky in a few days. We are here to organize support within the framework of the ‘Coalition of Willing’ and to structure it.” He emphasized the importance of this coalition, inviting all participants to Paris for a structured meeting on July 14, coinciding with Bastille Day celebrations.
The French leader highlighted that the coalition aims not only to provide military support to Ukraine but also to facilitate negotiations and exchanges with Russia concerning security and the future peace architecture in Europe. He expressed approval of Zelensky’s open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which called for direct negotiations, asserting that both Ukraine and Russia are essential in establishing a ceasefire and a peace plan. Macron noted that Europeans should be involved in these discussions, as they pertain to the broader peace and security framework for Europe.
Furthermore, Macron rejected the notion of conceding the Donbas region to Russia, stating, “Such a proposal has never existed for either Ukrainians or Europeans.” He added that in light of the current situation, such proposals should no longer be entertained.
In a related development, President Zelensky indicated that Ukraine is preparing meetings with key European partners, although specific dates for these engagements were not disclosed. Reports suggest that Zelensky is expected to attend the G7 summit in France in June.
The “Coalition of Willing” comprises nations supporting Ukraine and discussing potential long-term security guarantees for Kyiv, which may include the deployment of multinational deterrent forces in Ukraine following the establishment of peace.
French President Emmanuel Macron plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shortly, ahead of a significant coalition meeting in Paris. The discussions aim to enhance military support for Ukraine and facilitate negotiations with Russia regarding European security.
