Defend Developers PAC Launches to Support Crypto-Friendly Lawmakers

The Defend Developers PAC has emerged as a new political action committee aimed at supporting lawmakers who advocate for the legal protection of cryptocurrency developers. Established recently, the PAC intends to contribute significantly to key races in the upcoming midterm elections.

Unlike larger entities such as Fairshake, which has established itself as a dominant force in crypto-related political funding, Defend Developers PAC is focusing on backing incumbent politicians who have demonstrated support for the cryptocurrency sector. Gavin Zavatone, the PAC’s founder and policy lead at the DeFi Education Fund, emphasized the need for champions in Congress who can advocate for the interests of crypto technologists.

“We plan to raise and contribute more than six figures across dozens of key races in the midterms, because crypto technologists deserve champions in Congress who will go to bat for them,” Zavatone stated.

Registered federally last month, Defend Developers is classified as a hybrid PAC. This allows it to make direct contributions to candidates within Federal Election Commission limits, as well as to channel unlimited corporate contributions into independent advertisements. The PAC’s strategy contrasts with the predominant approach of super PACs in the cryptocurrency space, which typically operate without monetary limits.

Zavatone noted that the PAC aims to establish a robust political infrastructure to ensure that the United States remains a favorable environment for blockchain technology development. The board includes members from various organizations, including Uniswap Labs and the Solana Policy Institute, although initial funding details have not been disclosed.

In the current political landscape, Fairshake remains a significant player, having invested millions in supporting candidates aligned with cryptocurrency interests. Recently, Fairshake celebrated victories for nine Democratic candidates in California and one in New Jersey, as well as Republican Senator Mike Rounds in South Dakota. These successes illustrate the PAC’s strategy of fostering relationships with both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

As the general election approaches in November, the stakes are high, with potential implications for the balance of power in Congress. The outcomes of these races could influence the future of cryptocurrency legislation and regulation in the United States.

  • Defend Developers PAC aims to support lawmakers advocating for crypto developers.
  • The PAC is classified as a hybrid, allowing for both direct contributions and independent ads.
  • Fairshake continues to dominate the landscape with significant funding and recent electoral successes.

The Defend Developers PAC has been established to support lawmakers who advocate for cryptocurrency developers, focusing on key midterm races. While it operates differently from larger PACs like Fairshake, its goal is to build a political infrastructure that champions blockchain technology.
