Russian Strikes Disrupt Power Supply Across Ukraine Amid Increased Energy Demand

As of the morning of June 2, widespread Russian missile strikes targeting energy facilities have left numerous consumers in Kyiv and several regions, including Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Cherkasy, temporarily without electricity. However, officials from the Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo have indicated that scheduled power outages for residential and industrial users are not anticipated.

The Ministry reported that in Kyiv, the strikes damaged a production site and infrastructure of an energy company, resulting in injuries to two energy workers, who have since been hospitalized and are receiving necessary medical care.

Additionally, the Russian military targeted oil and gas sector facilities, causing infrastructure damage, although no injuries to personnel were reported. Emergency responders and operational services are actively working to mitigate the effects of these attacks.

Electricity Consumption Trends

Ukrenergo has noted a rise in electricity consumption, which as of 9:30 AM on June 2, was 8.2% higher than the same time the previous day. This increase is attributed to overcast weather and rain in parts of western and southwestern Ukraine, leading to reduced efficiency of residential solar power systems and a corresponding uptick in demand from the general grid.

On June 1, a daily peak in consumption was recorded in the evening, marking a 1.6% increase compared to the peak from the previous working day on May 29. This trend is typical at the beginning of the week.

Ukrenergo has advised that energy consumption should be concentrated during the hours of optimal solar power generation, specifically from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They have urged consumers to avoid operating multiple high-powered appliances simultaneously during the evening hours from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Furthermore, Ukrenergo emphasized that the situation within the energy system is fluid and recommended that the public stay informed through updates on the websites and official social media pages of local energy companies.

Massive Russian Assault on June 2

In the early hours of June 2, the Russian military launched a combined large-scale attack on Ukraine using missiles and drones. Major cities, including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Sumy, were targeted. The strikes resulted in casualties and significant destruction.

According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, 656 attack drones of various types were deployed, alongside 73 missiles launched from air, sea, and ground platforms. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 602 drones and 40 missiles. However, the Russian assault resulted in the impact of 30 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and 33 attack drones across 38 locations, with debris from drones falling in fifteen areas.

Recent Russian missile strikes have disrupted electricity supply across several Ukrainian regions, coinciding with increased energy demand due to adverse weather conditions. The attacks have resulted in injuries and infrastructure damage, prompting emergency response efforts.
