Sweden’s Gripen fighter jets, while not expected to immediately alter the dynamics of the battlefield, could enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, particularly with their advanced Meteor missiles. These missiles have the potential to push back Russian aviation from Ukrainian borders.
Experts caution against labeling these aircraft as “game-changers” without thorough testing in combat conditions. For instance, the F-16 fighters, which were anticipated to significantly impact the conflict, were delivered in older variants, limiting their effectiveness. A similar situation is anticipated with the Gripen jets, as Ukraine is expected to receive the C/D models, which are considered older versions.
However, the Gripen jets possess notable advantages. They are versatile in operation, capable of landing on various types of runways, and are among the most cost-effective options in their class regarding operational expenses.
One of the key strengths of the Swedish aircraft is their full compatibility with a wide range of Western weaponry, both American and European. The Meteor missile, in particular, is viewed as a potential “game-changer” if tactical deployment is successful. This missile could significantly challenge Russian aircraft that have been attacking Ukraine with guided bombs.
The Meteor, classified as an air-to-air missile, is recognized as one of the most effective long-range missiles for aerial combat. Its stated operational range exceeds 120 kilometers, with some estimates suggesting it could reach up to 200 kilometers.
A defining feature of the Meteor is its ramjet engine, which allows the missile to maintain high speeds throughout its flight trajectory. This capability enables it to retain substantial energy reserves even in the final stages of its approach, making it a formidable threat to agile targets.
The Meteor is designed to engage a broad spectrum of aerial threats, including fighter jets, bombers, missile-carrying aircraft, and large drones. It poses a particular risk to Russian Su-35 and Su-30 fighters, as well as to A-50 long-range radar aircraft, which are utilized for coordinating air operations.
Sweden's Gripen jets, equipped with Meteor missiles, may enhance Ukraine's air defense, though their immediate impact remains uncertain. The effectiveness of these systems will depend on their deployment and integration into existing operations.
