Romanian President Confirms Drone Debris Linked to Russian Attack

The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, has released details regarding debris from a drone that struck a residential building in Galați on May 29. According to assessments by state experts, the drone is identified as a Russian-made Geran-2.

Dan stated that the conclusion is based on a series of technical evidence gathered from the wreckage. Cyrillic inscriptions identifying the drone as “Geran-2” were found on the fragments, while examined electronic components, navigation systems, control modules, and structural elements exhibit similarities to previously identified Geran-2 drones recovered in Romania.

The report further indicates that the production markings, technical inscriptions, structural features, and materials used align with the manufacturing processes of Geran-2 drones analyzed in recent years.

Chemical and physical analyses confirmed the presence of materials and fuel types consistently recorded in devices of this series.

“The fact that such a device struck a residential building in Romania, causing injuries and material damage, is of particular seriousness, and the sole responsible party is Russia,” stated Nicușor Dan.

The President emphasized that the safety of Romanian citizens and the integrity of national territory are fundamental state obligations that will be defended resolutely. Romania plans to share the investigation results with its allies and relevant bodies within NATO and the European Union.

According to Dan, the country will continue to collaborate with partners to enhance security along the eastern border of the Alliance and will not overlook or downplay any incidents that threaten the lives of citizens, national security, or sovereignty.

It is noteworthy that during a recent attack by Russia on Ukraine, a Russian drone hit the roof of a high-rise building in Galați, igniting a fire and injuring two individuals. Romanian military officials explained that they were unable to intercept the drone, as only four minutes elapsed from the detection of the target to its impact.

The incident has drawn condemnation from NATO, the United States, and the European Union, with Bucharest urging the Alliance to expedite the delivery of air defense systems.

In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova threatened Romania with a “response,” while Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, cynically remarked that EU countries should “be quiet” on this matter.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed that debris from a drone that struck a residential building in Galați is linked to a Russian-made Geran-2. The incident has raised security concerns, prompting Romania to seek enhanced air defense measures.
