Russian Strikes Damage Railway Station in Shostka, Ukraine

Early morning train services in the Shostka region are operating according to schedule following a recent attack. The railway station was struck by multiple direct hits from Russian ‘Shahed’ drones, resulting in significant damage to the building and surrounding infrastructure.

The incident was reported by the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s state railway company. A spokesperson described the station as a typical decision-making center, emphasizing its role in facilitating daily travel for hundreds of residents in the Sumy region.

No casualties among staff or passengers were reported, as individuals were sheltered at the time of the attack. Morning train operations are proceeding as planned, though adjustments may occur for certain suburban routes.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, railway workers are currently engaged in efforts to address the aftermath of the strike.

Ongoing Attacks on Ukrainian Railways

Ukrainian railways have been a frequent target of Russian military operations. Ivan Us, a senior consultant at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, noted that strikes on railway infrastructure have become a primary objective for Russian forces. The intent is not merely to disrupt train services but to undermine Ukraine’s export capacity.

On May 18, Ukrzaliznytsia adjusted train schedules following a series of extensive nighttime attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Fortunately, both passengers and rolling stock were safeguarded from damage.

Earlier, on May 14, targeted strikes were reported against railway facilities, including damage to a shunting locomotive in the Kharkiv region, which caused delays for several trains.
