Ukraine and Denmark are enhancing their defense collaboration to address critical priorities for Ukraine’s armed forces. The focus of this partnership includes the procurement of Ukrainian drones, localizing production, and advancing air defense capabilities.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov recently held discussions with his Danish counterpart, Troels Lund Poulsen. A central topic of their talks was the supply of Ukrainian-made drones, particularly interceptors, to bolster Ukraine’s defense forces.
During the meeting, the two sides explored the expansion of the successful Danish model of supporting the defense industry. This approach allows foreign partners to directly finance arms production within Ukraine.
Since 2024, this mechanism has facilitated the attraction of approximately $3 billion for the production of Ukrainian weapons, including over 200,000 drones, thousands of electronic warfare systems, and missiles.
Ukraine anticipates further increases in procurement under this model, which aims to expedite supplies to the front lines while simultaneously investing in the domestic defense industry.
Additionally, Fedorov urged for the swift allocation of additional support ahead of the next meeting in the “Ramstein” format scheduled for June, emphasizing the need to implement the defense strategy effectively.
The discussions also covered steps for localizing new production in Denmark to meet the needs of Ukraine’s armed forces. This collaboration is expected to benefit both nations, as Ukraine gains more resources for its front lines, while Denmark accesses technologies that have proven effective in modern warfare.
Ministers also examined the prospects of a Drone Deal between the two countries, aimed at simplifying the exchange of technology and defense products, as well as accelerating the implementation of joint projects in the field of unmanned systems.
Another significant aspect of their defense cooperation is the development of air defense systems and the preparation of a domestic anti-ballistic project. The Ukrainian side proposed that Denmark participate in this initiative, particularly through contributions of radar systems that could play a crucial role in future technical solutions.
It is important to note that the Ukrainian Cabinet has already streamlined the process for leasing state property to defense industry enterprises during wartime. This change has provided Ukrainian arms manufacturers with new opportunities to expand production amid the ongoing conflict, allowing them to lease state property without auctions. These favorable conditions have been utilized by developers of missile systems, new weapon types, and explosives.
Furthermore, Ukraine, in collaboration with numerous foreign nations, is actively expanding drone production abroad as part of the Build with Ukraine initiative and other projects. Joint drone production is being launched in allied countries, including Norway, the Netherlands, Romania, and Germany. This model enables the establishment of production lines in areas where there is no constant threat of Russian attacks.
Ukraine and Denmark are deepening their defense partnership, focusing on drone procurement and local production. This collaboration aims to enhance Ukraine's military capabilities while fostering technological exchanges.
