Speculation is rising regarding former Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban potentially securing a position within the United Nations, which could provide him with diplomatic immunity from legal challenges in Hungary. This scenario is reportedly being discussed among factions of the Republican Party in the United States, particularly those aligned with the MAGA movement.
According to various foreign and Hungarian sources, Orban’s advancement to a senior UN role would grant him protections under the UN’s 1946 convention, which offers full diplomatic immunity to the Secretary-General, their deputies, and assistants, akin to that of ambassadors. This immunity would shield him from virtually all legal proceedings, including criminal cases, extending to his immediate family.
In addition to potential backing from U.S. officials, Orban may also receive support from Argentine President Javier Milei, whose influence is significant given the ongoing competition for the next UN Secretary-General position. Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency and an Argentine, is currently favored for the role.
Should Orban secure a UN position, it would also facilitate his relocation to New York. Reports indicate that he plans to visit the U.S. for the World Cup this summer, while his daughter and son-in-law have been residing there for the past year. If political tensions in Budapest escalate, Orban could find himself in the U.S. longer than anticipated, avoiding the need to seek political asylum in Washington.
When questioned about the possibility of facing legal repercussions from investigations initiated by the new Hungarian government led by Peter Mader, Orban dismissed the concerns. He stated, “Why would I be worried? I abide by the laws… I have sworn to uphold them, and I will continue to do so. Do you want to know anything else?”
Background:
- In late April, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Mader claimed that oligarchs close to Orban were transferring large sums of money to remote countries in preparation for potential flight and called for their arrest.
- Investigative journalist Szabolcs Pani suggested that Orban was preparing to seek refuge in the U.S. should he face legal challenges in Hungary.
Former Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban is reportedly being considered for a UN position that could grant him diplomatic immunity from legal issues in Hungary. This speculation arises amid political tensions in Hungary and potential support from U.S. and Argentine officials.
