On May 24, a series of intense airstrikes by Russian forces targeted Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to at least 87 others, including three children. The attacks marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with widespread damage reported across the city.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine confirmed the casualties, stating that emergency responders recovered the bodies of the deceased women from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. The strikes caused extensive damage to both civilian and administrative infrastructure, affecting 49 locations throughout the capital.
Rescue operations are currently underway as authorities work to clear debris and assist those affected. Initial reports indicated that the strikes involved a combination of 90 missiles and 600 drones, including the use of the Oreshnik drone, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
In addition to the fatalities in Kyiv, the broader impact of the strikes across Ukraine has been severe, with four confirmed deaths and nearly 100 injuries nationwide. The attacks have also damaged significant cultural and governmental buildings, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, theaters, museums, and universities, as well as residential areas.
Among the affected properties is a building on Hrushevskoho Street, which houses apartments belonging to President Volodymyr Zelensky and businessman Timur Mindich, who is currently under sanctions. Reports indicate that approximately 30 residential buildings in Kyiv have been either damaged or destroyed as a result of the strikes.
