The Ukrainian Border Service (DPSU) has indicated that there are currently no observed movements of military equipment or personnel in the border area with Belarus. This statement was made by spokesperson Andriy Demchenko during a national television marathon.
Demchenko confirmed, “As for our border line with Belarus, at this moment, we do not record the movement of equipment, weapons, or personnel in close proximity to our border or any accumulation of forces.”
Despite this, he noted that intelligence units are monitoring pressure from Russian authorities on Belarus aimed at increasing its involvement in the conflict against Ukraine. This situation poses a risk of renewed incursions from Belarusian or Russian military forces.
Demchenko emphasized the importance of understanding whether any potential military actions would involve Belarusian units or if Russia might deploy additional forces to Belarus for operational purposes.
Context on the Threat from Belarus to Ukraine
On April 17, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Moscow is attempting to draw Minsk into the war. He highlighted ongoing infrastructure developments in Belarus’s border regions, including the construction of roads leading toward Ukraine and the establishment of artillery positions.
Subsequently, Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi asserted that intelligence reports regarding a possible offensive by Russian troops from Belarus are credible.
On May 20, President Zelensky remarked that Russia is considering scenarios for additional attacks on northern regions of Ukraine, specifically in the Chernihiv-Kyiv direction, from Belarus and the Bryansk region.
In contrast, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has claimed that Minsk would not be drawn into Russia’s war against Ukraine unless there is aggression against Belarusian territory. He also extended an invitation to President Zelensky for a meeting.
