Drone Crash in Latvia: Incident Details and Official Response

On Saturday morning, Latvian authorities responded to reports of a drone crash into Lake Dridzis in the Kraslava region. The drone detonated upon contact with the water, prompting an immediate investigation by local police.

At approximately 8:00 AM, residents alerted the State Police about the incident. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the explosion. Police quickly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and began searching for debris.

Initial findings indicated remnants that likely belonged to the unmanned aerial vehicle. Given the extensive area needing examination, additional resources were deployed, including a specialized police unit equipped with drones, personnel from the State Fire and Rescue Service, and the National Armed Forces.

Authorities have advised local residents to avoid the area and to stay updated through official channels. Evika Silina, Latvia’s acting Prime Minister, stated that she is in contact with relevant agencies working in the vicinity of the explosion. In a social media post, she expressed her anticipation for detailed information regarding the circumstances and subsequent actions to be taken.

A witness, Vadim Stepanov, who was fishing at the lake during the incident, recounted the moment the drone fell. He initially mistook the object for a small aircraft before realizing it was a drone. Stepanov described hearing a sound akin to a moped as the drone flew overhead, then abruptly lost power and crashed into the lake, resulting in an explosion.

The National Armed Forces reported to the LETA news agency that their sensors did not detect the drone entering Latvian airspace, which is why no mass notification was sent to residents. This incident follows a previous occurrence on May 7, when Ukrainian drones mistakenly struck empty oil tanks in Latvia, attributed to potential issues in their programming.

The recent drone crash has raised concerns, especially in light of the earlier incident that contributed to the collapse of Latvia’s governing coalition. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations proceed.

A drone crash in Latvia's Lake Dridzis resulted in an explosion but no injuries. Authorities are investigating the incident and have advised residents to stay away from the area.
