Italy Allocates Additional €10 Million to Support Ukraine’s Energy Sector Recovery

On May 21, Italy announced it would provide an additional €10 million to Ukraine for restoration and repair work in the energy sector. This funding aims to bolster the resilience of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid ongoing challenges.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal shared the news via Telegram, noting that the agreement was signed by Italian Ambassador to Ukraine Carlo Formosa and Arthur Lorkovsky, director of the Energy Community Secretariat. Shmyhal expressed gratitude for Italy’s continued support, highlighting that prior contributions had already totaled €13 million to the Energy Support Fund.

“Today, we signed an agreement for the new contribution from our partners. We are thankful to Italy for their ongoing assistance!” — Shmyhal stated.

During a meeting with Lorkovsky in Berlin, Shmyhal acknowledged the importance of international support for Ukraine’s energy sector, emphasizing its role in ensuring the stability and security of millions of Ukrainians. They also discussed strategies for strengthening the Ukrainian energy system and further integration into the European energy space.

Key topics included mechanisms for attracting additional contributions to the Energy Support Fund, which serves as a vital tool for enhancing the country’s resilience. Shmyhal noted the potential for international businesses to invest in Ukraine’s energy sector, pointing out that the launch of updated auctions for new generation construction represents a significant opportunity for market engagement.

“We are preparing to present these and other opportunities at the URC conference in Gdańsk this June,” — he added.

Officials also agreed to work together on strategies to mitigate and insure against war-related risks for such investments, further demonstrating their commitment to rebuilding and strengthening Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“Together with our international partners, we continue to restore and fortify Ukrainian energy. I appreciate the Energy Community Secretariat for their effective coordination and systematic collaboration with Ukraine,” — Shmyhal concluded.

Italy's new €10 million contribution to Ukraine's energy sector aims to enhance infrastructure resilience. Minister Shmyhal highlights the importance of international collaboration and investment opportunities.
