Ukrainian Special Operations Forces reported a successful strike on the Syzran Oil Refinery, owned by the state company Rosneft, during the night of May 21. This facility, located over 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, has a processing capacity of up to 9 million tons of oil annually.
The attack reportedly resulted in a significant fire at the site. Military officials noted that the Syzran refinery plays a crucial role not only in meeting civilian fuel needs but also in supplying the Russian military aviation and ground forces in central and southern Russia. Additionally, oil products from this facility are exported via the Volga River and the Caspian Sea.
According to the Special Operations Forces, targeting enemy oil infrastructure diminishes Russia’s economic and logistical capabilities to sustain its military operations against Ukraine.
Prior to this incident, there were reports of a fire at the Syzran refinery amid warnings of drone threats. On May 19 and during the night of May 20, Ukrainian defense units targeted several key locations used by Russian occupying forces, including a Lukoil refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously confirmed plans for long-range strikes against Russian targets as part of the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian Special Operations Forces have struck a key oil refinery in Russia, impacting its military supply chain. This action reflects ongoing military strategies aimed at undermining Russia's operational capabilities in the conflict.
