Sweden Hands Over Replica of Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s Battle Banner to Ukraine

In a significant cultural exchange, Sweden has officially transferred a replica of the battle banner of Bohdan Khmelnytsky to Ukraine. The handover took place as part of ongoing efforts to restore Ukrainian historical heritage.

Andrii Sybiha, a representative from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude towards his Swedish counterpart, Maria Stenbergard, for facilitating this important initiative. He noted that the agreement to return the artifact was reached last year in Uzhhorod.

Sybiha emphasized the importance of this event in the context of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s broader strategy to reclaim historical artifacts and cultural heritage. The original banner, lost after the Battle of Berestechko in 1651, had been taken to Sweden as a military trophy during the Northern War and has remained there for centuries.

The transfer of the replica marks a step forward in Ukraine’s efforts to reconnect with its historical narrative and preserve its cultural identity.

Sweden has returned a replica of Bohdan Khmelnytsky's battle banner to Ukraine, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to reclaim its historical artifacts. This initiative aligns with President Zelensky's strategy to restore Ukrainian cultural heritage.
