Ukrainian defense manufacturers are increasingly asserting their presence in the international arms market, leveraging real combat experience against Russian forces as a key advantage. This shift has been noted in a recent report by Business Insider, highlighting how the war has transformed Ukraine into a hub for drone technology and modern warfare systems.
Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s defense sector has experienced rapid growth. The conflict has catalyzed advancements in drone development, electronic warfare systems, and other military technologies.
Ukrainian companies are now striving to translate their battlefield experience into international contracts and partnerships, particularly with NATO. According to Serhiy Honcharov, head of the National Association of Defense Industry of Ukraine (NAUDI), this practical experience on the front lines provides Ukrainian manufacturers with a competitive edge over some Western firms.
Honcharov explained that while many European manufacturers must convince clients through test results or computer simulations, Ukrainian firms can demonstrate the effectiveness of their technologies in real combat scenarios. This direct application of their systems allows them to provide military clients with insights into how their products perform under actual conditions.
He emphasized that Ukrainian companies not only offer advanced technologies but also invaluable operational experience. This includes knowledge on equipment maintenance, operator training, and adapting weaponry to contemporary threats. “We can explain how it truly works against the enemy. This experience is priceless,” Honcharov stated.
War Provides Ukraine with a Unique Advantage
The Ukrainian defense industry has particularly thrived in the drone sector. The ongoing conflict has positioned Ukraine as one of the most experienced nations in utilizing first-person view (FPV) drones, strike UAVs, and counter-drone systems.
Nikita Rozhkov, a representative from Frontline Robotics, remarked that Ukrainian companies have gained an “unfair advantage” due to their constant connection with the front lines. “We have a war – unfortunately,” he noted, explaining that proximity to combat allows engineers to receive immediate feedback from military personnel.
Rozhkov added that Ukrainian developers receive continuous information on the effectiveness of their systems, as the military employs them multiple times a day. “We don’t even need to ask for feedback separately – it comes in 24/7,” he said.
He also pointed out that Western nations should more actively integrate Ukrainian solutions into their defense systems, as the Ukrainian military possesses one of the most extensive practical experiences of modern warfare in Europe.
NATO and Western Firms Show Growing Interest in Ukrainian Expertise
There is an increasing interest among Western armies and defense companies in Ukrainian technologies, particularly in the areas of drones and electronic warfare systems. This interest stems from the substantial practical experience Ukraine has garnered during its conflict with Russia. While many NATO armies are still exploring the mass use of FPV drones and electronic warfare, Ukrainian military and engineers are continuously adapting technologies to real threats on the battlefield.
Ukrainian systems designed to counter Iranian Shahed drones, which Russia frequently employs in attacks on Ukrainian cities, are of particular interest. Igor Fedirko, head of the Ukrainian Defense Industry Council, noted that the effectiveness of Ukrainian developments has already attracted attention from partners in the Middle East, showcasing the capabilities of Ukrainian defense companies.
Ukraine Integrates into the European Defense Market
Amid the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian firms are increasingly forming joint projects with foreign manufacturers. For example, the Croatian company ORQA is collaborating with the Ukrainian drone manufacturer General Cherry. Western partners aim to combine Ukrainian combat experience with their own production capabilities.
Srdjan Kovacevic, co-founder of ORQA, stated that the experience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is unparalleled in the Western world today. He emphasized that the Ukrainian defense industry has learned to produce a vast number of drones amid constant warfare, making this experience particularly valuable to Western partners.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously highlighted that Ukrainian technologies and military experience have become some of the most sought-after in the world.
Ukraine’s Approach to Modern Warfare Evolves
The conflict with Russia has transformed Ukraine into a unique laboratory for modern warfare, where technologies are continuously adapted to new threats. As a result, the Ukrainian defense industry is increasingly viewed not as a sector reliant on aid but as a fully-fledged participant in the future European defense system.
Ukrainian Combat Experience
Notably, Norwegian expert Fabian Hofmann has indicated that Ukrainian long-range strike capabilities may represent the only viable option for Europe in the near future, particularly regarding the mass production of long-range drones. He asserts that European arsenals of long-range and deep-strike weapons are insufficient, and efforts to replenish them have been slow, with realistic timelines for rearmament extending into the 2030s.
