UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has informed close associates of his intention to step down from his role, indicating that he will outline a timeline for his exit.
A government member shared insights, stating, “Keir understands the political landscape. He recognizes the current chaos is unsustainable and wants to leave on his own terms. He will establish a schedule for his departure.”
However, the timing of this announcement remains unclear. Some senior allies of Starmer are urging him to refrain from making any statements until the results of the upcoming by-elections in Makerfield are available.
One minister noted that former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney is consistently advising Starmer to hold off. McSweeney believes that if the race is tight or if rival candidate Andy struggles, Starmer could still have a viable path forward.
Despite this, a supporter of Starmer indicated that he is not inclined to gamble on the outcome of the by-elections before making his move.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing to announce his resignation, with discussions ongoing about the timing. Allies are divided on whether he should wait for by-election results before making a public statement.
