In the early hours of May 16, Ukraine faced a significant aerial assault as Russia launched 294 strike drones from multiple directions. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted the majority of these drones, although some managed to reach their targets.
The attack involved various types of drones, including Shahed models, as well as others named Gerbera, Italmas, and imitation drones referred to as Parody. The drones were launched from regions including Oryol, Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, Shatalovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, as well as Chauda and Hvardiyiske in occupied Crimea.
Ukrainian defense capabilities were engaged in repelling the assault, utilizing aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups. These coordinated efforts were instrumental in mitigating the impact of the attack.
As of 09:00, preliminary reports indicated that Ukrainian air defense had successfully shot down or suppressed 269 enemy drones across the northern, southern, central, and eastern regions of the country. However, 20 drones struck 15 locations, with debris falling in nine areas.
The Ukrainian Air Force issued a warning, stating, “The attack continues; several enemy UAVs remain in the airspace. Please adhere to safety regulations!” This alert underscores the ongoing threat posed by aerial assaults in the region.
