U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived in China for a two-day diplomatic meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Upon his arrival in Beijing, Trump was greeted by a ceremonial welcome featuring 300 children dressed in blue and white uniforms, waving Chinese and American flags.
The reception was characterized by its grandeur, reflecting the formalities that Trump appreciates. The delegation welcoming him was led by Vice President Han Zheng, a key envoy for Xi in diplomatic engagements and a former member of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee.
As Trump made his way through the welcoming ceremony, the children chanted in Chinese, “Welcome, welcome, sincerely welcome.” The U.S. President acknowledged the crowd by raising his fist before entering the motorcade waiting for him.
According to the White House, several notable officials were present at the event, including U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue and Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai. China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu also attended the ceremony.
Trump is scheduled to meet with Xi formally on Thursday morning local time. Prior to his visit, Trump expressed skepticism about receiving assistance from China in resolving the ongoing conflict with Iran. He also mentioned having exchanged letters with Xi regarding concerns over potential Chinese arms supplies to Iran.
In response to reports about China’s plans to supply weapons to Iran, U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper stated that the U.S. received assurances that such actions would not take place.
