The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported the prevention of a planned assassination in Odesa targeting a senior military officer. An individual allegedly acting as an agent for Russian intelligence was apprehended on May 8, just days before the intended attack.
According to the SBU, the plot was designed to coincide with Victory Day on May 9, aiming to create a favorable narrative for the Kremlin. The suspect, a convicted felon from Donetsk, had been recruited by Russian operatives while seeking employment opportunities in Telegram channels.
Upon his recruitment, the individual moved to Odesa, where he rented an apartment to prepare for the assassination. He reportedly conducted surveillance on the officer’s residence and selected locations for an ambush.
As part of the operation, the agent received coordinates for arms caches from his Russian handler. He acquired an AK-74 assault rifle and two loaded magazines, concealing the weapon in a specially designed bag for transport within the city.
During the arrest, SBU operatives seized the firearm and a mobile phone, which contained communications with the Russian intelligence agent. The suspect has been charged with treason and attempted terrorism, facing potential life imprisonment and asset confiscation if convicted.
The SBU has thwarted an assassination attempt against a military official in Odesa, arresting a suspect linked to Russian intelligence. The individual was reportedly planning the attack to coincide with Victory Day celebrations.
