IOC Lifts Restrictions on Belarusian Athletes Amid Ongoing Conflict

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the lifting of restrictions on Belarusian athletes participating in international competitions. This decision, made by the IOC Executive Board on May 7, 2026, marks a significant shift since the initial imposition of these restrictions in February 2022, which were linked to Belarus’s support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

According to the IOC, Belarusian athletes have participated as neutral competitors in various international events without incident since the restrictions were enacted. The IOC’s statement emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the Belarusian National Olympic Committee differ from those of its Russian counterpart, for which restrictions remain in place.

While the IOC has lifted its recommendations, the final decision regarding the participation of Belarusian athletes in specific events will rest with the respective event organizers and international sports federations. These bodies are expected to consider the IOC’s guidance in their decisions.

The Ukrainian National Olympic Committee has expressed strong opposition to the IOC’s decision, citing ongoing support from Belarus for Russian aggression against Ukraine. They highlighted that Belarusian territory is being utilized for launching attacks against Ukrainian cities, arguing that this context undermines the justification for allowing Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flag.

This development has raised concerns among various stakeholders in the international sports community, as the implications of Belarus’s involvement in the conflict continue to resonate in the realm of global athletics.

The IOC has lifted restrictions on Belarusian athletes, allowing their participation in international competitions. This decision has sparked a strong response from Ukraine, which argues that Belarus's ongoing support for Russia's actions in Ukraine warrants continued restrictions.
