Despite recent threats from the Kremlin to escalate attacks on Kyiv, the European Union has reiterated its commitment to maintaining its presence in the Ukrainian capital. Anuar El-Anouini, a spokesperson for the European Commission, emphasized that these threats are part of Russia’s reckless escalation tactics.
El-Anouini stated, “Let me confirm our position on this matter. Public threats from Russia to attack Kyiv are part of its reckless escalation tactics… As for us, the EU, we will not change our position or presence in Kyiv.” He further criticized Russia for attempting to shift the blame onto Ukraine for its own aggressive actions.
He noted that attacks from Russia have become a daily reality for Kyiv and other regions in Ukraine. Over recent years, Russian assaults have damaged several diplomatic missions in Kyiv, including the EU delegation, due to indiscriminate attacks. “Russia attacks Kyiv and other cities across Ukraine daily, killing innocent civilians,” El-Anouini remarked.
El-Anouini also highlighted Ukraine’s ongoing calls for a ceasefire and peace, including a recent proposal from President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, he pointed out that Russia has shown no serious intention to halt the conflict, instead continuing its escalation and violence.
Background:
- Russia has urged foreign nations to evacuate their diplomats from Kyiv in anticipation of potential disruptions related to the May 9 celebrations in Moscow.
- In response to Russia’s unilateral declaration of a ceasefire for May 8-9, Ukraine called for an immediate cessation of hostilities starting Wednesday night, a plea supported by Western allies, including Germany and Norway.
- On May 6, Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia commenced renewed airstrikes from the early hours of the day.
- Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Russia’s refusal of Ukraine’s proposed ceasefire underscores Moscow’s lack of interest in genuine peace.
- Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is set to visit Moscow on May 9 to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, although he will not participate in the military parade.
The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine amid escalating threats from Russia. EU officials emphasize the ongoing violence and Russia's lack of genuine interest in peace, despite Ukraine's calls for a ceasefire.
