The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to a significant increase in aviation fuel prices, raising its share of operational costs for French airlines from 25% to 45%. Despite these challenges, the French government does not anticipate a fuel shortage in the coming months.
According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, airlines are bracing for potential difficulties due to soaring fuel prices, while government officials seek to reassure the industry. Following a meeting between government representatives and aviation sector leaders, French Economy Minister Roland Lescure stated that energy companies report no expected shortages of aviation fuel in May and June, with minimal risks projected for the future.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabaro noted that flight cancellations remain infrequent. He emphasized the substantial rise in fuel’s share of operational costs for airlines, which has nearly doubled.
Le Figaro further reports that approximately 20% of the aviation fuel used at French airports is sourced from Gulf states. The price of this fuel has nearly doubled since February due to the conflict in the region, complicating the financial situation for carriers.
As the summer season approaches—typically accounting for up to 70% of annual airline revenue—the government aims to alleviate industry concerns with promises of support. The French aviation sector employs around 100,000 individuals. Tabaro pledged increased flexibility in airport slot allocations, allowing carriers to adjust schedules based on demand and reduce fuel consumption.
However, Lescure dismissed the idea of imposing price caps on fuel or reducing taxes, labeling such measures as costly and ineffective. He highlighted that airlines could utilize mechanisms for deferring payments on taxes, fees, and social contributions to temporarily ease financial burdens.
French airlines are facing increased operational costs due to rising aviation fuel prices, now comprising 45% of expenses. The government reassures the sector of no imminent fuel shortages while exploring measures to support the industry.
