Norway Increases Military Support for Ukraine with New Funding Package

Norway has announced a significant enhancement of its military assistance to Ukraine, with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre revealing a new funding package of approximately 2.8 billion Norwegian kroner (around 256.95 million euros) on May 6. This funding will facilitate the procurement of American-made weapons through the PURL mechanism, which has now seen total contributions exceeding 12.5 billion Norwegian kroner (over 1.14 billion euros) from Norway.

The announcement coincided with the visit of Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov to Norway, where he met with Støre to discuss ongoing military support. Støre expressed hope that additional European nations would also contribute to the rapid supply of essential military equipment to Ukraine.

Norwegian Defence Minister Tore Sandvik emphasized that the PURL initiative represents an effective means of delivering critical weaponry to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, particularly missiles for the Patriot air defense systems. He stated, “The supply of this weaponry through PURL yields immediate results. PURL is an effective arrangement that Ukraine prioritizes.”

Moreover, the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting, has approved an extension of military support for Ukraine through 2026, allocating a total of 70 billion Norwegian kroner (over 6 billion euros). The funds will be distributed in close consultation with Ukrainian authorities to ensure their optimal impact.

On May 3, President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Prime Minister Støre, expressing gratitude for Norway’s military assistance and underscoring the urgency of timely support through the PURL mechanism, given the ongoing ballistic strikes from Russia.

Norway has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, amounting to approximately 2.8 billion Norwegian kroner, as part of its ongoing support through the PURL mechanism. The Norwegian Parliament has also approved further military assistance through 2026, highlighting the country's commitment to aiding Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
