Meta Launches Direct Messaging Feature for Threads Desktop Users

Meta has officially introduced a direct messaging (DM) feature for the desktop version of Threads, enabling users to engage in personal and group chats directly from their computers.

According to Meta’s spokesperson, this update aligns the desktop experience of Threads with rival platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky.

New Features Available:

Messages Tab: A complete inbox folder containing all conversations.

Requests Section: A space to view incoming messages from users you do not follow.

Search and Create: Users can quickly search for past conversations or initiate new chats through the web interface.

The spokesperson emphasized that many active users spend significant time on desktops, making the integration of a messaging platform in the browser crucial for retaining audience engagement.

According to Meta’s analytics, since the beginning of 2026, the number of messages sent on Threads has been increasing by 30% each week. Currently, users are sending approximately 350 million DMs every week.

In addition to the web version, Threads is rolling out a unique Live Chats feature for real-time discussions. The initial testing has been conducted by sports communities during the NBA playoffs.

Key Features of Live Chats:

Participant Limit: Up to 150 active users can send messages, media files, and links.

Viewer Mode: Once the participant limit is reached, additional users can observe the conversation, react, and participate in polls.

Interactivity: Emoji reactions are supported for messages within the chat.

With these new features and technical advancements, many analysts agree that Threads is evolving from a platform for public posts into a comprehensive environment for private and group communication.

“The web version plays a vital role in engaging our most active users with Threads, and we will continue to invest more resources into it,” the spokesperson concluded.

Meta has launched a direct messaging feature for Threads on desktop, enhancing user engagement with new functionalities. The platform is evolving to better facilitate private and group communication.
