As of May 5, the Ukrainian General Staff has reported 155 combat engagements along the frontlines, indicating a sustained level of military activity. The report details a significant missile strike by Russian forces, involving 11 missiles, alongside 40 airstrikes and the deployment of 141 guided bombs.
Additionally, Russian troops utilized 6,023 kamikaze drones and conducted 2,606 shelling incidents targeting both civilian areas and Ukrainian military positions. The majority of these confrontations were concentrated in five key sectors, with the Pokrovsk direction remaining the most active.
In the South Slobozhansky direction, Russian forces launched 12 assaults on Ukrainian positions near the towns of Vovchansk, Vovchanski Khutory, Okhrimivka, Starytsia, Lyman, and towards Izbytske. One engagement is ongoing in this area.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully repelled 12 attacks in the Kostyantynivka direction, particularly around Kostyantynivka, Oleksandro-Shultine, Pleshchiyivka, Illinivka, Ivanopillia, Rusynyi Yar, and Sofiivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces executed 34 attacks, attempting to advance in the vicinity of Zatyshok, Rodynske, Pokrovsk, Molodetske, Novooleksandrivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Muravka, and Novomykolaivka, as well as towards Bilitske, Shevchenko, Serhiivka, Bilyakivka, and Novopidhorodne.
In the Oleksandrivka direction, there were 12 attempts to improve positions, with assaults directed at Zlahoda, Dobropillia, Danylivka, Berezove, Yehorivka, and Nova Zaporizhzhia. One engagement is currently ongoing.
The Hulyaipole direction saw 18 attacks aimed at the towns of Varvarivka, Staroukrainka, Zaliznychne, Hirke, Olenokostyantynivka, Hulyaipilske, and Charivne, with two ongoing confrontations reported.
Fighting also continued in the North Slobozhansky and Kursk, Kupiansk, Lyman, Kramatorsk, and Dnipro directions.
On April 26, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, noted an increase in Russian offensives along nearly the entire front. He emphasized that Ukrainian defense strategies focus on careful planning, innovative solutions, and effective use of available resources, resulting in significant Russian losses that exceed their capacity for reinforcements.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on April 23 that the situation on the front is particularly notable, asserting that Ukrainian positions are more stable than in previous months and years. He also highlighted ongoing Russian preparations for aerial attacks against Ukraine.
Earlier, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicated that the realities on the battlefield by the end of March 2026 demonstrate that significant Russian gains, let alone a complete victory, are not inevitable.
Intense fighting continues on the frontlines in Ukraine, with the General Staff reporting numerous attacks and counterattacks. The Ukrainian Defense Forces are actively repelling assaults while managing ongoing military engagements across multiple sectors.
