Ukrainian Forces Confirm Strikes on Russian Military-Linked Facilities

The Ukrainian General Staff has confirmed strikes on the VNIIR-Progress plant in Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic, Russia, during the night of May 5. This facility specializes in the production of GNSS receivers and antennas for satellite systems including GLONASS, GPS, and Galileo.

Among its products are adaptive antenna arrays used in kamikaze drones such as the Shahed, as well as in cruise and ballistic missiles. These technologies are integral to the precision weaponry that Russia employs in its ongoing military operations against Ukraine, particularly targeting civilian infrastructure.

In addition to the Cheboksary strike, the General Staff reported damage to the Kirishi oil refinery in the Leningrad region, which resulted in a fire on-site. Ukrainian military officials indicated that these facilities play a crucial role in supporting the Russian military’s operational capabilities. The extent of the damage is currently being assessed.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) also reported successful strikes on the Kirishi Oil Refinery and the Kirishi oil pumping station. The Kirishi refinery ranks among the top three oil refineries in Russia, with an annual processing capacity of 20 to 21 million tons of crude oil, accounting for over 6% of the country’s total oil refining output.

The SBU noted that the drone attack resulted in hits on three primary processing units at the refinery, leading to an ongoing fire. Additionally, a storage tank containing petroleum products at the pumping station was reported to be damaged.

Earlier, the governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, stated that 18 drones were intercepted over the region. He confirmed a fire in the industrial zone of Kirishi, where one of Russia’s largest oil refineries is located, which has previously been targeted in Ukrainian strikes.

Monitoring systems, including NASA’s FIRMS, have detected fires at the Kirishi Oil Refinery following the night’s attacks. Residents in the Chuvash Republic reported hearing explosions, although regional head Oleg Nikolaev did not comment on the attacks or their aftermath.

Analysis by the Astra Telegram channel indicated that the VNIIR-Progress plant had previously been targeted during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The channel also reported that at least 18 regions across Russia issued alerts for missile threats, with flight restrictions implemented at 18 airports. Notably, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, located over 2,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, declared a missile threat for the first time.

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian regions and occupied territories have frequently experienced drone strikes and missile attacks. The Ukrainian General Staff has consistently confirmed these operations, asserting that Ukraine’s Defense Forces are actively working to diminish the combat capabilities of Russian occupation forces and compel Russia to cease its armed aggression against Ukraine.

Ukrainian military operations have targeted key facilities in Russia, including a plant linked to military technology and a major oil refinery. These strikes are part of Ukraine's broader strategy to disrupt Russian military capabilities amid ongoing conflict.
