Ukraine Announces Ceasefire from Midnight May 5-6 Amid Russian Claims of Truce

Ukraine has declared a ceasefire effective from midnight on May 5, lasting until May 6, in response to recent statements from Russian officials regarding a potential truce. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of valuing human life over commemorative events, stating that Ukraine had not received any official requests concerning the cessation of hostilities, despite claims circulating on Russian social media.

In his announcement, Zelensky remarked, “We believe that human life is incomparably more valuable than the celebration of any anniversary. We are announcing a ceasefire starting from 00:00 on the night of May 5-6. Until that time, it is realistic to ensure the onset of silence. We will act reciprocally from the specified moment. It is time for Russian leaders to take real steps to end their war, especially if the Russian Ministry of Defense believes that it cannot hold a parade in Moscow without Ukraine’s goodwill.”

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense had declared a ceasefire from May 8 to May 9. They warned that any violations of this truce by Ukraine would result in a massive retaliatory missile strike on the capital.

On April 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a lengthy phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, discussing the possibility of announcing a ceasefire for May 9. Following the call, Trump indicated that he had suggested a “small ceasefire” to Putin, expressing his belief that the Russian leader might agree to it. Trump also noted that he thought Putin had been ready to reach an agreement for some time, but that certain individuals had complicated the process for him.

Ukraine has announced a ceasefire from midnight May 5-6, coinciding with Russian claims of a truce. President Zelensky highlighted the need for concrete actions from Russia to end hostilities, while the Russian Ministry of Defense warned of potential consequences for any violations of their declared ceasefire from May 8-9.
