Russian military units are reportedly increasing their presence near Kupiansk, a city in eastern Ukraine, with claims of partial control over a nearby village. This information was shared by Viktor Trehubov, a spokesperson for the Joint Forces Group, during a recent televised briefing.
Trehubov indicated that the Russian forces have been amassing personnel and resources in preparation for offensive operations. He noted that the period from February to March saw a decrease in military activity, which allowed Russian troops to regroup and recover.
Two key factors are aiding the Russian military’s current efforts: the arrival of warmer weather, which enhances the effectiveness of natural cover, and adverse weather conditions in April that may have hindered Ukrainian defenses. Trehubov emphasized that Golubivka, a settlement north of Kupiansk, plays a crucial role in the Russian strategy, as it serves as a launch point for their advances into the city.
“It is essential to neutralize the Russian forces attempting to enter the city from the north, which is more challenging now that Golubivka is less controlled,” Trehubov stated. He acknowledged the difficulties posed by the increased number of Russian troops in the area.
On April 15, Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reported that the Russian military had intensified its offensive operations along nearly the entire 1,200-kilometer front line, coinciding with the changing weather. Syrskyi identified several areas of heightened conflict, including Oleksandrivka, Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, and Lyman.
Further developments were noted on April 17, when Volodymyr Polevyi, head of communications for the 7th Rapid Reaction Corps, mentioned that Russian troops are consolidating resources in the southern outskirts of Myrnohrad in Donetsk. He pointed out that they are utilizing residential buildings as natural cover during their operations.
