Ukraine is intensifying its defense capabilities in response to a surge in hostile attacks, with specific measures announced for the cities of Dnipro and Odesa.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that regions including Ternopil, Zhytomyr, Rivne, and Trostianets in Vinnytsia Oblast are strengthening their defensive positions. He noted that military command and the Ministry of Defense are analyzing each attack and proposing appropriate responses. For Dnipro, this includes the deployment of additional radar systems, electronic warfare units, and extra crews.
Regarding Odesa, Zelensky mentioned that while the city has a higher interception rate for incoming threats, there is a need for further improvements. He emphasized the importance of enhancing defenses for urban and rural areas alike.
The president pointed out that Russian forces are attempting to circumvent Ukrainian air defense systems through increased attack frequency and intensity. He remarked, “Strengthening is necessary for our cities and villages. It is crucial that we work daily with partners to secure components for air defense against missiles. In April, we ensured necessary supplies, and new contributions to the PURL program were made. For May, similar tasks are planned.”
In a report on the recent attacks, Zelensky revealed that over 400 drones were launched against Ukraine that morning, with more than 200 identified as Shahed drones. Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 388 of these unmanned aerial vehicles.
It is noteworthy that Zelensky has previously stated that Ukrainian air defense systems are intercepting over 90% of hostile drones. However, he acknowledged that additional reinforcement is required to address threats from ballistic missiles.
In response to a rise in attacks, Ukraine is bolstering its defense systems, particularly in Dnipro and Odesa. President Zelensky highlighted the need for enhanced air defense capabilities against both drones and ballistic missiles.
