The United States is calling on European nations to enhance their financial contributions to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that the threat posed by Russia is more immediate for Europe.
During a recent discussion, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth highlighted that European countries, with a combined GDP of $20 trillion, are in a better position to support Ukraine compared to the U.S., which has a GDP of $2 trillion. He stated, “Europe can take responsibility, Europe can fund this, and they are doing so through our PEARL initiative and our European command.”
Hegseth noted that the American public expects other nations to share the burden of supporting Ukraine. He remarked, “If this is so important for Europe, and I understand why, given Russia’s invasion and the bravery of the Ukrainians, then European countries should pay for it.”

In response to Hegseth’s comments, Senator Angus King questioned whether the U.S. was signaling a lack of interest in Ukraine’s situation, suggesting it was solely a European concern. Hegseth clarified that the threat is much closer to wealthy and capable European nations, urging them to take the lead in addressing the issue.
