Ukrainian Parliament Extends Martial Law and Mobilization for 90 Days

The Ukrainian parliament has approved two significant legislative measures aimed at extending the current state of martial law and general mobilization. This decision, reached during a recent session, reflects ongoing concerns regarding national security amid the ongoing conflict.

According to reports, 315 members of the Verkhovna Rada voted in favor of extending martial law, while only two opposed the measure. The dissenting votes came from parliamentarians Oleksiy Honcharenko and Hanna Skorokhod.

In a related vote, 304 lawmakers supported the extension of general mobilization, with two votes against. As a result, both the martial law and mobilization periods have been extended for an additional 90 days, now set to last until August 2, 2026.

Following the vote, the parliament directed its chairman, Ruslan Stefanchuk, to sign the laws immediately and forward them to the president for enactment. This marks the 19th occasion the Ukrainian parliament has addressed the issue of extending martial law and mobilization since the onset of the conflict.

On April 27, President Volodymyr Zelensky registered these legislative proposals with the parliament. He previously indicated that the state of martial law could only be lifted once Ukraine receives credible security guarantees, which he views as essential for ending the ongoing war.

“The end of martial law will occur when Ukraine receives security guarantees. Without such guarantees, this war cannot be considered over. We cannot acknowledge that it has ended, as there remains a risk of renewed aggression from our neighbor,” Zelensky stated.

President Zelensky emphasized that security guarantees would involve monitoring by partners and their presence in the region. He also noted that the decision to lift martial law would depend on the assessment and position of military command, which is discussed in strategic meetings. “They must confirm that all infrastructure is prepared for the lifting of martial law,” he added.

The Ukrainian parliament has voted to extend martial law and general mobilization for an additional 90 days, reflecting ongoing security concerns. This decision follows President Zelensky's call for credible security guarantees before any consideration of lifting martial law.
