Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the international community to prevent what he describes as “nuclear terrorism” by Russia, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. His remarks were made during a press conference in Rome on April 15, 2026.
In a message shared via Telegram, Zelensky reflected on the catastrophic explosion of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant’s fourth reactor, which resulted in the release of significant amounts of radioactive materials. He noted that hundreds of thousands of individuals have been dealing with the aftermath of this disaster for decades.
“Forty years ago, the world faced one of its largest nuclear catastrophes. A substantial amount of radioactive substances were released, affecting countless lives,” Zelensky stated.
The president highlighted the construction of a sarcophagus over the damaged reactor to contain radiation, followed by the efforts of more than 40 countries to secure the site with a safe confinement structure to prevent further disasters.
“These two structures are essential in protecting against radiation emissions and contamination. Their maintenance is crucial for everyone’s safety. However, Russia’s ongoing war poses a renewed threat of a technological disaster, as Iranian drones frequently fly over the site, with one striking the confinement structure last year,” he added.
Zelensky urged the global community to take decisive action to stop what he termed Russia’s nuclear terrorism, emphasizing that the most effective approach is to compel Moscow to cease its aggressive actions.
“We remember every individual who sacrificed their life to mitigate the consequences of this tragedy. May their memory be honored, and may we never forget the victims of the Chernobyl disaster,” he concluded.
The situation continues to develop, with concerns mounting over the safety of nuclear facilities in conflict zones.
